Biography

Mr. Ricardo Lagos was the president of Chile between 2000 and 2006. Prior to becoming president, Mr. Lagos held a position within the government as Minister of Education (1990) and Minister of Public Works (1994). 

During the ’80s, he led the Democratic Alliance and the Independent Committee for Free Elections. He was the founder and first president of the Party for the Democracy.

Lawyer and Ph.D. in Economics at Duke University, he has also received the Honoris Causa from a large number of prestigious universities in the world, such as the Universidad Autónoma de México, Universita di Bologna and Universidad de Salamanca, amongst many others. He was granted the “Berkeley Medal,” a top distinction of Berkeley University in California.

He is former President of the Club de Madrid. Mr. Lagos was one of the United Nations Special Envoy on Climate Change. He is President of the Fundación Democracia y Desarrollo in Chile.

Mr. Lagos was born on March 2, 1938. He is married and has five children and seven grandchildren.
